DESCRIPTION:
Tremont Watch Co., Boston, Mass., man's pocket watch, 18 size, 15 jewels, key wind and set, gilt plate movement with lever escapement, cut bimetallic balance in a 4 oz coin silver, engraved, open face case with silver cuvette with engine turning and engraved "F.T. Drew B.C.&M. RR" and Roman numeral, single sunk, white enamel dial, blued steel spade hands, serial #7769, c1865, together with an embossed brass station check marked "Wakefield 196 B&M RR J.Robbins Boston".
CONDITION:
CASE: Dings and pin pricks; Scratches on outer surface of case; Scratches on cuvette; Bow replaced; Precious metal content marked. DIAL: Hairlines in enamel, very light, at signature and 60 second mark; Tiny flake at edge of seconds center; Minor rust stains; Specks of dirt / dust. HANDS: Mismatched. MOVEMENT PLATES: Minor scratches on plate; Key guard missing; Case screw with minor loss to head; Minor losses to blue on screws, two with minor oxidation; Jewel cracked, top plate, third wheel; Specks of dirt / dust, oily. MOVEMENT FUNCTION: Running order (winds, sets and ticks). The railroad referred to on the cuvette is the Boston, Concord, and Montreal, a small regional concern which was later acquired by the Boston and Maine RR. A web search has revealed nothing about F.T. Drew, but a more intensive investigation may lead to further information. The presence of the numbered B&M tag is also of interest - this is a station check, used by the railroads to identify baggage. See tagtown.net for more information on checks. J. Robbins manufactured checks in Boston from the mid 19th century through the first decades of the 20th. A scarce and interesting watch.
